Gen Con Recap 2019: Day 1

Like every year, I think I’ll have time during the show to update things but that never happens. The convention is just too busy and entertaining to stop and post so as I settle back into to post-Con life, I get the energy to recapture the magic before too much of the memories fade. Because my photos are in order, it’s easiest to just go through things each day.

Gen Con 2019 Day 0

After a hectic last few days, I made it into Indy for the unofficial Gen Con start. Travel went smoothly and, due to time and packing concerns, I didn’t bring anything fragile this time so no broken minis to fix.

Even though the Con doesn’t start until tomorrow, the Fantasy Flight Report happened and was an interesting kickoff to the show.

New Models And Brown Dudes

Gen Con is steadily approaching and I’ve got a few more irons in the fire before I go. I’m not sure what all I’ll finish up but we’ll give it a go and see what works before time runs out. Up first is a project I’ve had in mind for years now and I’m finally getting somewhere with it thanks to the help of Colton and Reese.

Dropzone Commander Slog For Earth

I got to take another crack at Dropzone Commander’s 2nd Edition with a local game. Not realizing what it would be like, I wanted to see what a “standard” army would look like at the new 1750 points. It turned out to be a pretty futile attempt as we had only three players and three-way games are, as I’ve found in this system, a really slow affair. Compound this with still trying to get the rules in our minds and we simply bit off more than we could chew.

Gen Con Approaches

It is now less than two weeks until the biggest gaming convention cranks up in Indianapolis. Like always, I’m starting to feel the crunch as I prepare for that annual journey to gaming mecca. While I worry about finishing up the various projects I figured I’d explore what I’m hoping to see at the big show.

Double Vision

Gen Con 2019 is rapidly approaching and as I started up my annual trophy creation, I was trying to think of what diabolical new challenge I through at the Loopin’ Chewie Tournament group. Since I have to cannibalize a full Loopin’ Chewie set every three years, I had to pick up a new one this year and was left with some extra pieces.

Skulls And Bones

Hating to let a project linger, I moved back to my HATE terrain to finish it up. I knew I wasn’t going to spend a lot of time on each individual piece so after the wash work I did earlier, I decided to pick out a few highlight details and work those in. Due to the dark nature of the game, I decided to pick out the skull and bone work on each of the terrain pieces. I under-estimated just how many of those details were around.

More Terrain Tests: Joan Of Arc

After a week hiatus with the family, I’m back with a quick comparison of some Joan of Arc terrain. There is a ton of content in that game and since I want to start with the terrain (like most of my projects*), I took a look at the many trees that come in the base set.

*well technically I started off Joan of Arc with my Dragon

Mind The Gap

Switching gears once again, I jumped over to Joan of Arc to mess with the biggest “miniature” I’ve ever owned, the legendary Dragon. This mini almost single-handedly sold me on the game before I had a chance to play it, as I imagine it did for many other folks. I basically saw it in the display case at Gen Con, turned around immediately and ran off to find my friend. I then hauled him over to look at it as well and we switched up a lot of our plans to make sure we demoed the game.

Having the dragon mini in hand, it is quite an amazing piece and equally challenging to prep.

Terrain-ing On The Quick

Switching gears from Dropzone for a bit, I went back to HATE. Last I left this project, I had completed a sample painting of an extra miniature. Ready to jump back in and work some more of the game, I started with the terrain. I always like to start with terrain as it is one of the few things that will be used in almost every game.
