Unexpected Arrivals

Move over Walking Dead, without warning, this arrived the yesterday:

I knew it was en route generally speaking but didn’t get a tracking number or anything for this new CMON monstrosity.  The game was highly anticipated and is none other than the new A Song of Ice & Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game. That is a pretty big mouthful so I’ll shorten it to ASOIF for short.

Venturing Into The Frozen City

With 22 days left until Gen Con, I figured I’d get a jump on an event I’m participating in and one that sounds quite fun. “Frostgrave: Bleak Sunrise with Creator” is a sold out introductory event into the world and rules of Osprey’s popular Frostgrave miniature skirmish game.

I’ve danced around playing this game for some time now.  Some friends of mine said they really liked it but it was a bit too random. Others just barely dipped their toe in and want to explore the game in more detail.  With this intro game at Gen Con, I’ll be able to get a firsthand view of the game with none other than the designer, Joseph A. McCullough.

Half Year Game Challenge Report

So it is now July and that means I’m halfway through my game challenges so it is time to check in with how I’m doing.

For my “1×100” challenge, where I aim to play at least 100 different games at least one time, I’m doing pretty well.  58 total unique games so far for the year means I’m beating the average.  CabinCon is always a good time to hit a wide variety of games and it did not disappoint.  On the other challenge, however, I’m obviously struggling.

Everything Old Is New Again

The big announcement this week was Fantasy Flight revising its cash cow, X-wing Miniatures game to a shiny 2.0.

X-wing has been so many things to me over the years but the game system was getting long in the tooth and I welcome the overhaul.

Walking Dead Wednesday: Upcoming Gen Con Events

Sorry, no Pit session today but this past weekend marked the annual Gen Con event list release. While the list isn’t exhaustive, as it only includes those that registered events during initial registration period, it is the bulk of the events that you’ll see and a good bell weather for what is hot right now.

A New Contender In The Pew-Pew Arena

The news has been making the rounds across the websites but I thought I’d weigh in briefly on Ares Games’ announcement that they are developing a starship battle game set in the Battlestar Galactica universe. The game “scale” looks to be a dogfight scale game with players controlling a number of individual fighter scale ships.

Gen Con 2018, T-minus 203 days

The beginning of the year doesn’t just include resolutions and goals but it means preparations.  Even though August is a ways off, planning for the biggest show of the year, Gen Con, starts now.  Yesterday, the first volley of activity for this great convention started with the opening of event submissions.

Gen Con 50 Recap Day 1

Thursday opened the Con with its typical crush of attendees all vying for position at the main entrances.

Gen Con 50 Dropzone 2.0 Beta Rules

At Gen Con 50, we were able to talk to the Hawk team and get a rough idea of the major changes coming to Dropzone 2.0.  These rules are still in beta so may change and are mainly from my notes so I may have missed or misinterpreted them:

Gen Con 50 Post Script

So we’re in the Indy Airport, Granite City and Gen Con is over. I was obviously way too busy to keep up with the blog but I have a lot of notes ready and will try to get them out in the next week or so.

It was a spectacular Con and I’m excited to work on my events for next year.
