Remodeling The Ghost

It’s funny how projects can get set aside and then sudden inspiration will strike and move the project forward.  A friend of mine got me a Phantom II ship pack for the X-wing Miniatures Game.  While very nice, I had initially made fun of the ship because I wasn’t aware of what it was- a replacement shuttle for the Ghost in the Rebels cartoon series.  Being tied the Ghost, I was more interested and dug out my Ghost, still in its box.

It wasn’t sealed because it was part of a custom project I had started back in June, ran into some trouble and shelved to be completed at a later date.  That date became last night.

Nostalgia Is A Powerful Drug

Playing X-wing reminded me of another project I’ve been cooking for awhile.  It’s getting to the point in my pimping sickness that I now will start laying the ground work for pimping out a game long before I get it.  As is the case in this 80’s overload game, Lazer Ryderz by Greater Than Games.

Going Big With X-wing

On a whim, we decided to change things up this weekend and break out an old standby, X-wing Miniatures Game.  Maybe it was the new movie coming out this week or just seeing all those great little ships sadly sitting on the shelf with no pew-pews to be heard.  Either way, we decided to rectify that situation and since we knew we’d make a night of it, we should go big.  Epic-ly big.

It’s been a while since I hit X-wing and even longer since I’ve seen the Epic rules and Huge ships but we did some homework and wrote up some 300 point lists. That was the easy part. Setting up was another 2+ hours trying find all my ships and cards and setting up a 6×3 table space.  Eventually we got it all settled and were ready to play.

Convention Season Prelude

This past weekend kicked off the start of my usual convention season prep with the annual Gen Con event registration.  This will be my eleventh Gen Con and one would think I’d be used to the stress and frustration of their event registration process but no such luck.

I can’t complain though. This is the 50th anniversary of Gen Con so there is a lot of demand for hot events and so getting into those requires some blind luck.  I was happy to make it into one of the sold out event slots for CMON’s upcoming Song of Ice and Fire miniatures game and I’m excited to go see They Might Be Giants.  I’ve wanted to see that band live for years now so having an exclusive event sounds like a great way to hear them.

Showcase: Dropzone Commander Starter set (Resistance)

Over the past couple of years, I’ve been getting more and more into miniatures games.  It started with Fantasy Flight’s X-wing Miniatures Game which spoiled me with prepainted minis and no need for any terrain building.

My game group had seen a relatively new game around by Hawk Wargames and it looked fun but I didn’t want to jump back into the whole hobby side of modeling, painting, and terrain building unless the game was truly great. At Gen Con, Dropzone Commander, a 10mm skirmish war game had demos and we were able to finally try it out.  The game was a lot of fun and the miniatures seemed easy to paint with very little assembly.  To make it even easier, Hawk Wargames had the brilliant idea of making easy and great looking paper terrain so once you pick up a starter and do any minor assembly, you can throw it all down and get started.

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone’s holiday is going well.  2016 was a lot of fun. Thank you for reading and commenting and I look forward to bringing you more pimped content in 2017.  Happy Holidays!

Showcase: Assault on Hoth: The Empire Strikes Back

I’d had my eye on the old West End game, Assault on Hoth: The Empire Strikes Back, for a long time but I’m never a fan of chits and standees. So I decided to recreate a version like quite a few other BGGers and upgrade the components.

I finished this project earlier this year after working on it off and on for over a year but since Rogue One is hitting the theaters this weekend, these bad boys have been obsessively on my mind:

Storage Wars

I picked up some pluck foam the other day so that I could finally properly store my Dropzone Commander minis and it got me thinking of game storage solutions and where we are in the industry.

Big Doins

No, not “doyns,” “do-INZ.”  Big stuff is brewing.  I teased this photo back when I was exploring The Cave:

Exploring The Cave options

Recently, our group tried out The Cave, a 2012 game from Polish designer Adam Kałuża.
