a pursuit of fruitless endeavors and endless refinements

Month: June 2019

Mind The Gap

Switching gears once again, I jumped over to Joan of Arc to mess with the biggest “miniature” I’ve ever owned, the legendary Dragon. This mini almost single-handedly sold me on the game before I had a chance to play it, as I imagine it did for many other folks. I basically saw it in the display case at Gen Con, turned around immediately and ran off to find my friend. I then hauled him over to look at it as well and we switched up a lot of our plans to make sure we demoed the game.

Having the dragon mini in hand, it is quite an amazing piece and equally challenging to prep.

Terrain-ing On The Quick

Switching gears from Dropzone for a bit, I went back to HATE. Last I left this project, I had completed a sample painting of an extra miniature. Ready to jump back in and work some more of the game, I started with the terrain. I always like to start with terrain as it is one of the few things that will be used in almost every game.

Battle For Earth First Impressions

With the new rules for Dropzone Commander 2nd Edition read, I was able to get in a game this past weekend. We’re still new to the system but felt like we should put the game through its paces to see where it stands.

CabinCon Infinity, Or How To Spoil Things

While I only played a small part of one game of Infinity at CabinCon, playing just one model in between two warring factions was pretty fun. There was very little risk or reward for me but it was a wildcard for Sean and Colton playing the full scenario. I tried not to play spoiler or kingmaker and really just play more character driven. This led to some imbalance as I started picking on Colton’s units that kept aggro-ing me but it was still a fun little skirmish.

Battle For Earth Is Here

I picked up the new Dropzone Commander rule book, Battle for Earth, and have had a little bit of time to start reading through. Of course the first thing I did was flip to the back of the book to go through the new 2nd edition rules. This has been a long time coming and with the force builder out, these rules helped fill in some gaps the unit stats were showing.

CabinCon 2019

Our annual gathering , CabinCon, happened this past weekend with four of us making the initial trek up the mountains this year. Sean, Colton, Reese, and I got things settled upon arrival and immediately jumped into some gaming. We kicked things off with a game that caught my eye in a living room full of game boxes and tubs: Meeple Circus.

Finishing Up For Cabin Con

We started our annual Cabin Con yesterday but I ran out of time to post what I was able to finish up for some of our premiere games. First up is painting up my Frostgrave Tavern base for my wizard band.

Basic Needs

A while back, I wanted to make an actual base for my Frostgrave crew and found a great cottage/tower model. My friends were able to print it out but found that the components were extremely time consuming (not to mention a lot of material). We decided to scale it back a bit from the original idea and I finally got around to completing the project.

Adrenaline Preparation And A Long Awaited Arrival

The painting desk has been a little dry recently as I try to recharge my batteries. But I must press on as I have our annual CabinCon coming up and while I might not be doing as much prep as I usually do, it is an excuse to pull out something different to work on, namely the Adrenaline board game.

A Farewell To First Edition

Dropzone Commander has been a great ride and even with all the ups and downs of the last few years as the original company was sold and a new edition announced, it still holds a lot of weight with my friends. The UKGE convention happened over the weekend and the first salvos of the real 2nd edition have landed.

I complained last week that releasing the book without unit stats will be dangerous unless the online builder is released as well and it seems they did just that. There is still a bit of dust for TTCombat to clean up with the new army builder in Beta and having some obvious errors but the company seems fully committed and that is really all we can hope for.

While 2nd edition gets cleaned up for its official opening later this month, we decided to do one last game in 1st edition to give the original a final and proper send off.
