Switching gears from Dropzone for a bit, I went back to HATE. Last I left this project, I had completed a sample painting of an extra miniature. Ready to jump back in and work some more of the game, I started with the terrain. I always like to start with terrain as it is one of the few things that will be used in almost every game.
With the new rules for Dropzone Commander 2nd Edition read, I was able to get in a game this past weekend. We’re still new to the system but felt like we should put the game through its paces to see where it stands.
The painting desk has been a little dry recently as I try to recharge my batteries. But I must press on as I have our annual CabinCon coming up and while I might not be doing as much prep as I usually do, it is an excuse to pull out something different to work on, namely the Adrenaline board game.
Dropzone Commander has been a great ride and even with all the ups and downs of the last few years as the original company was sold and a new edition announced, it still holds a lot of weight with my friends. The UKGE convention happened over the weekend and the first salvos of the real 2nd edition have landed.
I complained last week that releasing the book without unit stats will be dangerous unless the online builder is released as well and it seems they did just that. There is still a bit of dust for TTCombat to clean up with the new army builder in Beta and having some obvious errors but the company seems fully committed and that is really all we can hope for.
While 2nd edition gets cleaned up for its official opening later this month, we decided to do one last game in 1st edition to give the original a final and proper send off.
I’ve had the board game HATE for a while and I knew I’d want to paint it up but the game has a ton of minis. They are all pretty fantastic with a ton of detail so they deserve to shine. Unfortunately, painting all those minis up would take longer than I have the patience for and the color schemes would likely be pretty muted anyway. Give all that, I decided to try out a very simple approach. I had a broken model (with a replacement on the way) so I decided to test my approach on it and get my process down before diving in.
I still want to finish up the Operation Red Veil final mission but I got an opportunity to throw down a full 300 point game this weekend and put together a quick report. Due to time constraints and my inexperience with the rules, we only got to play one full round but it was enough to see the game in more detail.
I’m still chilling out in my hobby hiatus but we were at the Museum of Science and Nature recently and I remembered I drafted this post almost a year ago. I dusted it off and decided to finally post it. Initially I was waiting to get more info from the Museum but they never responded.
Every time we go to the museum we stop over in a little corner of the building to check out the small display regarding Ancient Egypt. While the kids watch videos and ogle the mummies, I’ve been enthralled with one of the exhibits’ educational pieces, a large diorama depicting the life and times of ancient Egyptians living in and around a temple.
This large glass cased display is about 10′ x 6′ (rough estimate) and packs a lot of great detail into the space. Every time I look at this piece I find something new and figured I’d share some of my favorite vignettes.
While I’m taking a little break from painting, I did have some items that I completed but never mentioned. One of them is what I will use for the Dropship in the charity-based miniatures game Operation Last Train. This game by Joseph McCullough features volunteer soldiers rescuing survivors from a planet overrun with enemies. To get in and out quickly, the teams need to move fast and Mantic’s TAD-65 Hornet Dropship from their Warpath miniatures game.
While I was really excited to get my new Infinity figures prepped, I still had one thing to complete before I could officially complete my Operation: Red Veil. The last mission, and likely the most interesting, has a “Yuan Yuan” character as a neutral AI figure causing trouble for everyone. If I had pre-ordered the starter when it first came out, I would have been able to receive a special promo Yuan Yuan figure. Since I didn’t, I only had a little token to represent the figure and that just wouldn’t do. So I went looking for a replacement and stumbled on this:
As I mentioned last week, we got in a nice game of Batman Miniature Game last weekend. I decided to go back to my roots a little bit and post in the comic format. This isn’t a narrative comic like I’ve done with Walking Dead but I like how it allows the story come out with the pictures more than the text. We’ll see how well it does but as I refine the process a little more, I should be able to post these a little easier.
