The first unofficial day of Gen Con started Wednesday and usually it is a quiet affair with us picking event badges and tickets and then settling in for some pre-Con gaming. This year, Fantasy Flight decided to mix it up and run their InFlight Report of what is up-and-coming before the Con started. They started off with some lighter announcements of Arkham Horror 3rd edition but then finally got into the meat with a big Star Wars Armada announcement.

We arrived in Indy with much less ado than last time. No redeye flights. Just a quick flight and hop over to the hotel. Gen Con scaled back their advertising this year and didn’t have anything at the airport this time. We did arrive a day before most people but they had adverts at the airport last time. All-in-all, traveling went well with one notable exception:
After some furious painting this afternoon, I finished up my Dropzone Commander army for the big campaign event at Gen Con 2018. I went through to finalize my list and found that I didn’t just need to work up my new commander Tilt Rotor aircraft but also needed to work up another squad of infantry and another set of tanks.
Lucky for me, the infantry I was painting used a pretty simple scheme of just taking the base primer grey, adding black details like the boots, belts, and helmet, then washing it all in pure GW Nuln Oil.
T-minus two days until Gen Con 2018 but we leave tomorrow so I gots some work to do today. Things are going alright as I was able to knock out some pending items yesterday. Namely, I finished up the X-wing Uglies event I’m running.
I finally got around to punching out and opening all of Warhammer Underworld: Shadespire’s bits as well as putting together the Stormcast side of the starter set.
Move over Walking Dead, without warning, this arrived the yesterday:
I knew it was en route generally speaking but didn’t get a tracking number or anything for this new CMON monstrosity. The game was highly anticipated and is none other than the new A Song of Ice & Fire Tabletop Miniatures Game. That is a pretty big mouthful so I’ll shorten it to ASOIF for short.
With 22 days left until Gen Con, I figured I’d get a jump on an event I’m participating in and one that sounds quite fun. “Frostgrave: Bleak Sunrise with Creator” is a sold out introductory event into the world and rules of Osprey’s popular Frostgrave miniature skirmish game.
I’ve danced around playing this game for some time now. Some friends of mine said they really liked it but it was a bit too random. Others just barely dipped their toe in and want to explore the game in more detail. With this intro game at Gen Con, I’ll be able to get a firsthand view of the game with none other than the designer, Joseph A. McCullough.
Sorry, no Pit session today but this past weekend marked the annual Gen Con event list release. While the list isn’t exhaustive, as it only includes those that registered events during initial registration period, it is the bulk of the events that you’ll see and a good bell weather for what is hot right now.
The news has been making the rounds across the websites but I thought I’d weigh in briefly on Ares Games’ announcement that they are developing a starship battle game set in the Battlestar Galactica universe. The game “scale” looks to be a dogfight scale game with players controlling a number of individual fighter scale ships.
