Gen Con 2018 Day 1

Day one Gen Con 2018 passed with a blur as I filled my schedule with events. It started off with X-wing 2.0’s preview tournament. This turned out to be more “preview” than “tournament” but was pretty fun even if winning didn’t actually mean anything.

Championship Formula Racing: Monte Carlo’s Revenge

A friend was in from out of town the other night and I knew he’d like the racing game, Championship Formula Racing, so I put it to the table and got us all set up for some three-way racing.  After the obligatory example through the first turn, we reset the track, configured our cars, and started it up.

Bret chose the black Lotus 77 with a slow start speed, high accel/decel and top speed and the worst skill option. Reese went with the blue Tyrrell P34 six-wheel and had lower than average accel/decel, high top speed and a fast start speed.  I decided on the orange March 761 with average accel/decel/start speed, higher top speed and wear, and lower skill.

Speed Dating: Games Workshop’s WH40K Skirmisher, Kill Team

When I was out at my local Warhammer store last week, picking up my painting handle, the owner let me know that they were running some Kill Team demos later in the month.  I stopped by this past weekend and had the chance to get a little taste of it to see what it was all about.

Shadespire Gets Pampered

I finally got around to punching out and opening all of Warhammer Underworld: Shadespire’s bits as well as putting together the Stormcast side of the starter set.

Thoughts On A Game Of A Game Of Thrones

So after our first game of A Song of Ice & Fire Miniatures Game, I’ve had some time to collect my thoughts.  As a quick recap, we played a 30 point “small” game using only the starter set. The army lists were netdecked from the Kickstarter updates that featured some initial build lists.

A Game Of A Game Of Thrones

With most of my Kickstarter package in from A Song of Ice & Fire Miniatures Game in, I pushed to get it to the table and finally put it through its paces. My friend and I had a chance to play a demo of the game back at last year’s Gen Con but the experience was pretty piss poor.  I’ve watched several playthroughs online and read the rules fully so was hopeful that we could see the game in the best light this time.

Back To The Track

Earlier this week, I had the chance to break out Championship Formula Racing again. We had 6 players this time with four newbies and two veterans.  As is typical when I play the game with new players, we ran a “practice turn” where we start the race and get through the first turn so that players can understand the rules and have a better idea on building their car.

After the practice turn, we set up our cars and started out.

I started in 2nd position (in the ’57 red Ferrari-Lancia 801) but quickly took the lead in turn one. Wyeth was in the orange March 761, Louis was in the Yellow Penske PC4, Jonas in the Black Lotus 77, Sean in the white/red McLaren M23, and Colton bringing up the rear in the blue Tyrrell P34.

Handling Minis

I’ve been looking for a better way to hold my minis as I paint them and some time ago, I saw that Games Workshop makes a miniatures “handle.” When I was looking for them six months ago, they were all sold out but they finally came back in stock and picked one up to see how I liked it.

Venturing Into The Frozen City

With 22 days left until Gen Con, I figured I’d get a jump on an event I’m participating in and one that sounds quite fun. “Frostgrave: Bleak Sunrise with Creator” is a sold out introductory event into the world and rules of Osprey’s popular Frostgrave miniature skirmish game.

I’ve danced around playing this game for some time now.  Some friends of mine said they really liked it but it was a bit too random. Others just barely dipped their toe in and want to explore the game in more detail.  With this intro game at Gen Con, I’ll be able to get a firsthand view of the game with none other than the designer, Joseph A. McCullough.

The Table Has Turned

I’ve been slowly working on creating 6′ x 4′ gaming table with storage underneath for various miniatures games and I finally wrapped up the final touches.
