a pursuit of fruitless endeavors and endless refinements

Roll Out!

I didn’t have a chance to write up stats on my Optimus Prime conversion for Dropzone Commander but was able to complete a bit more of his final “package.”  I’d already completed his truck and robot modes but still had one little nagging thing missing: what was inside his trailer.

More Than Meets The Eye

Holy Epic Crossover! I’ve had this mod in my queue for a while now but I’m happy that I finally broke it out and was able to finish it up.

Dropzone Commander: Shackleton Escape Pod

As I was building my first ruined building for Dropzone Commander, I was also looking to do something with the set of Shackleton Escape Pods I picked up.  Looking closer at the building wreckage, it looked like something pretty epic struck the side of the building but what could have collapsed that part of the building so completely?

what indeed…

Dropzone Commander: Demolition Derby

In an effort to vary some of my Dropzone Commander terrain, I recently picked up a set of mdf buildings from Empires at War.  I usually wouldn’t waste time on more buildings because the paper terrain versions work well for me but these are nice in that they feature destroyed buildings with multiple floors.  I spent the weekend getting one of the kits out and seeing what all I could do with it.

Death Of An Icon

My resurgence into modern comics had me reminiscing about the comics I collected as a kid.  At the top of that list was Detective Comics from the early 90s and my favorite artist at the time was Norm Breyfogle.  His art was one of the biggest reasons I followed Batman and helped shape my view of the iconic character today.  Norm Breyfogle passed away Monday but luckily his art and legacy survive.

All Aboard!

I had some more time so I decided to finish up the rest of the Dropzone Commander Monorail scenery pack.  I decided to keep it in the muted tones I found in a recolored vintage image of art deco trains from the early twentieth century. This meant keeping the gunmetal primer as a base and customizing my red into a dark mauve.

Off The Rails

With Test of Honour Week over, I started up a project I’ve been waiting on for a while now.  In a bit of ironic coincidence, we took the weekend to go up to the Georgetown Loop and ride their old steam train.  I also just happened to pick up the Dropzone Commander Monorail scenery kit.  I usually don’t jump into a project as soon as I pick up the product but the forces seemed in alignment so I pushed forward.

Test Of Honour Week: Scatter Terrain And Friend Of Sword-Master

The week is winding down but I have a few final things that were completed just under the wire. The first is one of my first attempts at scatter terrain.  I don’t do a lot of this as I usually buy a scenery piece and paint it up.  This time I wanted to have some bamboo-based terrain and that isn’t easy to outright buy so I had to make my own.

Ninja Progression: A Painting Process In Black & White

Having recovered from my fuzzy primer incident, I went back to my Test of Honour Ninja figures to finish them up.  I decided to take pictures of the progress as I went along, mainly to see how things were coming out and what was actually effective for my standard table-top quality style.  I started first with the ninja hero.

Spraying Them Up And Stripping Them Down

My friends have really gotten into the Frostgrave spirit but I thought I should finish up some pending models before I forget.  Those models would be my small Test of Honour set.  I have had my Ninjas and Samurai ready and primed for a while now and recently thought that I should prime my Ninjas in a dark color to make painting them up go so much quicker.  I grabbed the models and got to work.

ugh. What the hell?!
