We got in a game of Fire & Axe the other night and every time I play it, I just want to dive right back in. There is something about the theme (which I’ve been on a viking kick for some time now) and the slight abstract gameplay that just calls to me. I’ve resolved to pimp the game out as I enjoy it too much to sit there plain in its vanilla, factory-freshness. I need to put my mark on it so time to start brainstorming. For now I’ll just have to be content to capture it in light and shadow.

The image was partially inspired by the game we played in which Reese dominated the raids. I don’t recall exactly but he went on a tear and sacked all but five cities, including taking the big three: Paris, Constantinople, and Rome. Most of the time he didn’t even bother softening the city up with trade goods first. He just piled dudes aboard his longship and set sail, destroying everything in his path.

I took a different route than normal by trading with destinations throughout most of the game. The saga cards that drive the story and goals of the game were in alignment with that strategy and it eventually paid off.

The game has just the right amount of luck, player interaction, “take that,” and victory paths that it will definitely stay in the game collection for a long time. It is hard to say which game I prefer in the viking theme game genre but every time I play Fire & Axe, it only grows in its esteem.

Shot details: Single diffused Light aimed at the background on the right with a close light bounce on the left (usually a light colored board game box). The glow in the background is an LED tea light, laid down so that the reflection of the lamp catches on the glossy board game board.
