Showcase: OGRE

This is one my first fully pimped project and easily one of my favorites. For a long time I’d been interested in Steve Jackson Games‘ OGRE. I like the simplicity and asymmetry but wasn’t a fan of chits and hex grids nor did the theme seem especially original after I found it 30+ years from it’s introduction.

Kwanchai Moriya is probably my favorite board game artist though he didn’t start out as such. Originally a studio artist (and still is), Kwanchai is an avid board gamer and being an artist, started playing around with retheming out of print games. One of his first and most popular was taking OGRE and retheming it into an alternate World War II war game.

So Mad Max: Fury Road came out in the summer of 2015 and a friend was really into the whole mythos and genre. He picked up an old Milton Bradley game, Thunder Road, first published in 1986, and showed it to me.

As I’ve discussed previously, I’ve wanted the old out-of-print Broadsides and Boarding Parties for a while so when my friend decided to sell his copy, I jumped at the chance. It just happen to be about the same time that Ares Games’ Sails of Glory was hitting the shelves. I ended up with both games in my collection at the same time and was playing around with both when it hit me: why not make a giant-sized version of Sails of Glory using components from both games?!? (the why not is actually pretty obvious as my living room picture below can attest but whatever. Paying attention to “details” kills too many otherwise fun and absurd ideas).

I was trying to figure out how best to carry my X-wing miniatures models as I started traveling to tournaments both locally and farther away like Indianapolis’ GenCon and Fantasy Flight’s Worlds competition held Minnesota. I randomly stopped at a garage sale (something I do maybe once every few years) and happened to find an old Star Wars action figure case for $3 (Power of the Force Millennium Falcon edition from Kenner produced around 1996). Once I saw it, I knew it would work perfect as a case for my X-wing minis.

So one of the main points of this blog is to not only talk about techniques to pimp your game and talk about what is going on in the industry but also show off my completed projects. I plan on making these “showcase” posts when I finish up a project but since I have a backlog of completed work already, for now I will be discussing some of my favorite games that started me on the this path.
