My friend and I had a chance to play a demo of the game back at last year&#8217;s Gen Con but the experience was pretty <a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/?p=2640\">piss poor<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve watched several playthroughs online and read the rules fully so was hopeful that we could see the game in the best light this time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cf.geekdo-images.com\/medium\/img\/X2GabkhLHjgt3DyEdaZBy2kYgb4=\/fit-in\/500x500\/filters:no_upscale()\/pic4218513.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Since my friend doesn&#8217;t have his Kickstarter copy yet, I set up both armies using options from the designer&#8217;s Kickstarter update for playing with just the starter set for both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/cmon\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-tabletop-miniatures-game\/posts\/2197168\">Stark<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/cmon\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-tabletop-miniatures-game\/posts\/2180748\">Lannister<\/a> factions.\u00a0 The lists that CMON put in the Kickstarter updates are a great resource to new players as a way to jump into the game quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The Lannister List for this battle was Michael Shinall&#8217;s &#8220;Just Better Than You&#8221; 30 point list:<\/p>\n<p><b>Commander: <\/b>Jaime Lannister <i>(The Kingslayer)<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lannister Guardsmen + Jaime Lannister (5 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>Lannister Guardsmen + Gregor Clegane <i>(Lord Tywin&#8217;s Mad Dog)<\/i> (8 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>Lannister Halberdiers + Assault Veteran (7 pts)<\/li>\n<li>House Clegane Mountain&#8217;s Men (6 pts)<\/li>\n<li><b>NCU: <\/b>Tyrion Lannister (4 pts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Stark, I used Shinall&#8217;s &#8220;House Umber List&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><b>Commander: <\/b>Greatjon Umber <i>(Lord of Last Hearth)<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>House Stark Sworn Swords + Greatjon Umber (5 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>House Stark Sworn Swords (5 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>House Umber Berserkers + Robb Stark <i>(The Young Wolf) <\/i>(10 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>Stark Outriders (7 Pts)<\/li>\n<li>Grey Wind (0 Pts)<\/li>\n<li><b>NCU: <\/b>Sansa Stark (3 Pts)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With our lists set, we finished setting up the scenario &#8220;A Game Of Thrones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-5392\" src=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-600x400.jpg 600w, http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-198x132.jpg 198w, http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-400x267.jpg 400w, http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3-900x600.jpg 900w, http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The objectives layout was interesting were the lone objective on the Stark side of the board was an objective that scored 2 VPs instead of one but forced the unit controlling it to roll a panic test with a -2 penalty.\u00a0 The other four objectives were scattered on the other side of the field and dealt with gaining an extra tactic card, giving an enemy unit bad conditions, causing your opponent to draw one less tactic card, and choosing an enemy NCU (non-combat unit) and negating all their abilities.<\/p>\n<p>I was playing Stark and rolled highest so I chose the left side of the battlefield (in the picture above) and my friend was playing Lannisters on the right. I decided that the double VP objective would be easy to get and would likely see little battle since it&#8217;d force a unit to sit on it away from all the action.\u00a0 Grey Wind would be a great unit to just camp out on it since he was fast and had the best morale on the board.<\/p>\n<p>My opponent didn&#8217;t like the idea of me just camping on 2 VPs a turn so surprised me by committing two units to possibly contend with my little wolf.\u00a0 I had my Outrider cavalry unit on my far left flank (top of the board) but the Lannisters put Jaime&#8217;s guard unit right along the same path.\u00a0 I put my Umber Berserkers slightly left of center and my vanilla group of Stark Swords right of center to maybe babysit Robb&#8217;s pet.\u00a0 The Lannisters ended in a split formation with two on the right and two units on the left.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>With setup complete, we were ready to begin but first a quick public service announcement:<\/p>\n<p>We found out quite quickly there is a method to moving a tray full of figures across the battlefield.\u00a0 Here is the wrong way:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Song Of Ice &amp; Fire Miniatures Games: how not to move figure trays\" width=\"629\" height=\"354\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vD564jiJR1Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; Greatjon&#8217;s &#8220;S&#8221; words also march forward to threaten my closest objective.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large Clegane&#8217;s Guards forward and have the Mountain Men maneuver out to start working the wolf side of the map, via Tyrion&#8217;s control of the Maneuver command on the Tactics board.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large solid plan for what I should do on the Tactics board, I punt and throw Sansa at the Crown.<\/p>\n<p><a complaints must have touched the psychotic boy king as he put the fear of God in those Mountain Men and panicked them severely, sending a whole rank to run off into the sea.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large Grey Wind to the objective, angle my vanilla &#8220;S&#8221;words to babysit Robb&#8217;s pet.\u00a0 Lannisters push the Halbardiers forward, in striking distance of their closest objective and Jaime&#8217;s Guards inch forward.\u00a0 I find that my Outriders are in a horrible position.\u00a0 They can charge straight at Jaime but that will likely end poorly and leave them open to the Halbardiers so I decide that I&#8217;ve played them all wrong and have them pull a hard right and powerslide across the rear of my zone to find something better to pick on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pimpmyboardgame.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/a-song-of-ice-and-fire-miniatures-game-01-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large and only then do I remember that objectives don&#8217;t score until the end of round two.\u00a0 Ah well, just sit, Grey Wind. I move Greatjon&#8217;s Swords to the forest and control the objective that grants me an extra card (negating the Halbardiers&#8217; objective denying me a card).\u00a0 My Outriders decide that the Vanilla Swords will baby sit the wolf and decided to squat on another objective. The Mountain Men march out to meet the wolf and Grey Wind is sitting, <em>still<\/em> is sitting on the pallid bust of Pallas just above my battle&#8217;s shore.<\/p>\n<p>Second round ends but this time we score victory points.\u00a0 I gain 5 VPs to the Lannister&#8217;s 1 VP. The unit is vulnerable so I make the Lannisters reroll their saves and they end up taking all seven hits to bring the unit down the 2 figures.\u00a0 They pass their panic roll and live on.\u00a0 This forces a critical panic test on my Berserkers at -2 due to Lannister Supremacy. Also, Clegane&#8217;s force wouldn&#8217;t follow on to take the objective since they didn&#8217;t attack. I&#8217;m sitting on three objectives and two of them (the one with my outriders and the other with my berserkers) are out of reach of any enemy combat unit.
